Flocabulary Launches Online Program to Close Achievement Gap through Hip-Hop

NEW YORK (SEPTEMBER 13, 2011) Flocabulary announced today the launch of a new online subscription program that delivers educational hip-hop songs and digital media to K-12 teachers and students. By utilizing classroom technology to make the program more affordable and accessible, the subscription plan creates a new channel for Flocabulary to provide resources that are proven to raise scores on state tests.

Flocabulary learning programs are currently used in more than 15,000 schools and reach a weekly audience of 6 million students. Building upon the success of their print programs, Flocabulary now offers teachers and students unlimited digital access to lessons, songs and videos for grades K-12 in subjects like vocabulary, social studies, science, math and current events.

“As more schools move their teaching and learning online, we saw an opportunity to build a platform that can deliver fun, relevant content and fundamentally change the way kids learn,” says Flocabulary co-founder Alex Rappaport.

Flocabulary programs employ research-based techniques to raise scores on state reading tests. The results of a 2009 independent study by the Educational Research Institute of America (ERIA) show that middle school students who used Flocabulary’s Word Up Project for 7 months had significantly higher scores on standardized tests in New York, Pennsylvania and Alabama. The results were most dramatic in areas serving low-income students.

Flocabulary analyzes state and Common Core standards to ensure that each song and accompanying lesson teaches required curricular material. To produce the songs, Flocabulary teams up with professional artists, including Grammy-winning producer 9th Wonder.

Says Rappaport, “We strive to create learning tools that bring academic content to life and help students make meaningful connections in school. A motivated student is a successful student.”

Flocabulary is offering a free two-week trial, which provides unlimited access to all songs, videos and lessons. Subscriptions are available for $7/month or $63/year.
