Garland ISD Welcomes CBS This Morning & Flocabulary

In case you missed our Instagram Story on Monday, members of the Flocab team made a trip down to Texas to visit some amazing students at Carver Elementary School and their incredible teacher (and Flocabulary MC Educator), Melody McAllister. What’s more, our friends at CBS This Morning joined us to learn more about how students are using hip-hop to making learning engaging, fun and effective!

The morning started with a warm welcome from Carver Elementary’s talented students:

Cameras in the Classroom 🎥

The CBS crew set up their lights, mics and cameras, and we began a geology lesson using Flocabulary’s Types of Rocks video.

CBS correspondent David Begnaud watched and worked along with the students. Despite the hot lights and boom mics, these Carver Tigers were unfazed by their close-ups with the camera!

A Flocabulary Surprise 🎉

Students were excited (and a little overwhelmed) when Flocab’s own rapper and former teacher and principal, Ike Ramos, showed up to co-teach the lesson.

…Of course, no Flocabulary lesson with Ike is complete without a classroom rap-off!

After an adventurous morning, the fun continued with the CBS team as they interviewed students, teachers, and even a quick Q&A with Ike.

Student Reflections

Melody was kind enough to share some of her students’ reflections with us the next day, too. Click the image to view the image full-size and read about their experiences:

We are so grateful to Melody, Principal Wendy Williams, Dr. Mida Milligan, Dr. Kristin Wolfkill, the CBS crew and everyone at Garland ISD for their support and warm welcome on this unforgettable day.
